Spiritual Care

Compassionate care for the human spirit

The hospital experience can be one of great joy, as in the birth of a child or an experience of healing, or of distress and grief in the face of deepening health challenges, chronic conditions or end-of-life passages. In any of these situations, individuals may face questions about who we are, where we belong, on whom we can rely, and what we value and cherish.

How we can help

Spiritual Care services are available to people of all faiths and spiritual perspectives, including:
  • Compassionate listening and companioning
  • Assessment of spiritual needs
  • Support during crisis situations
  • Connections to your faith tradition for religious rituals and support
  • Meditation space and sacred texts
  • Emotional and spiritual support for experiences of loss and grief, hope and healing
  • Weekly Christian non-denominational worship at each hospital
    • Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH): Wednesdays: 10:30 am on the 3 North Complex Transitional Care Unit
    • Milton District Hospital (MDH): Thursdays: 11:00 am on the 2 North Complex Transitional Care Unit
    • Georgetown Hospital: Wednesdays: 11:00 am on the Complex Continuing Care Unit

How to access Spiritual Care

The easiest way to access Spiritual Care is to ask your nurse to call or page. After hours on-call coverage is available for urgent care, and can be accessed by asking nursing staff to page the non-denominational on-call chaplain. In addition, you can ask your faith leader; rabbi, minister, imam or other religious leader to attend to your needs while you are in hospital. Roman Catholics seeking sacramental care such as Sacrament of Reconciliation and Healing (anointing) or the Eucharist can ask hospital staff to have the hospital's Main Switchboard page the on-call priest. Eucharistic visits from the local parish can also be arranged. Our professional spiritual care practitioners are available weekdays and can be reached by phone.
