Inpatient Surgery

OTMHMDHGT

Inpatient Surgery occurs when a surgery is performed with the expectation that the patient stays in the hospital for at least one night. After the surgery, the patient is admitted into a room on one of our units.

Inpatients should plan to bring a change of comfortable clothing and other items that they need. All valuables should stay at home.

For all surgeries, you have to attend a Pre-Admission appointment to prepare you for surgery. This includes speaking with a nurse who will arrange any blood tests, x-rays or other tests that may be required. Please visit the Pre-Admission Clinic section for further information.

If you do not feel well or there is a change in your health before your planned surgery, please call your surgeon’s office as soon as possible.

Day of Surgery Procedure

On the day of your surgery, you should report to your designated registration area at a specific time that will have been given to you at your pre-admission appointment. Occasionally, the time of your surgery may change and when possible the Pre-Admission Clinic will notify you of any time changes one business day before your surgery.

Important Notice to Patients

The Operating Room may be needed for life threatening emergencies. Although this does not occur often, we do not know in advance when these emergencies are going to occur. If an emergency does happen, the time or date of your surgery may be changed. You will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.

Staying Overnight at the Hospital After Surgery

Quiet Time has been designated daily, from the hours of 10pm until 7am, to promote a restful environment for our patients. Other than this, we endeavor to collaborate with the patient, family/partners in care, and the inter-professional care team to determine family supports and number of visitors at the patient’s bedside. We will work with patients and family members to accommodate overnight stay requests where possible.

Depending on the Hospital location you are at, there are a number of different options for food and shopping.
