The Acute Hand Therapy Program provides a team approach of care for complex hand injuries and post-op cases requiring treatment from Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists with specialty training.
What We Do
Therapists will work with patients one on one to develop an individualized treatment program. Treatment may include custom orthoses, therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, and patient education. Patients will always be prescribed a home exercise program, as this is one of the most important ways to optimize recovery and improve patient outcomes. Please note that custom orthoses are not covered by OHIP, so a fee will apply. Therapy itself is covered by OHIP, for a limited number of sessions. To maximize functional outcomes, patients must be fully committed to engaging in therapy and their home exercise program.
Conditions We Treat
- Complex Hand Trauma
- Post Op Tendon Reconstruction
- Fractures
- Reconstructive hand surgery such as replantation, joint replacements, tendon reconstructions, peripheral nerve repairs, and Dupuytren’s palmar fasciectomies
- Upper Extremity Complex Region Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
- Complex elbow trauma that requires splinting
Who We Accept
We accept patient referrals primarily from:
- Halton Healthcare Plastic and Orthopedic Surgeons
- External physician (if the patient lives in the Halton Region—post op protocol and surgical note required); date of injury is 3 months or less from time of referral and falls within the conditions we treat
Referral Process
- Hand Therapy Referral Form must be completed by physician and faxed to (905) 815-5109
- ALL referrals will be triaged by the Hand Therapy team to ensure they meet the required criteria
- Referrals that do not meet criteria will be faxed back to the referring physician
- If a fracture is suspected, a referral must be made to a Halton Healthcare Plastic or Orthopedic Surgeon
