Measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with an infected person. With a recent rise in measles cases in Ontario and ongoing global outbreaks, it’s more important than ever to be careful and take proactive steps to protect yourself and your community.
Know the Symptoms
Measles often begins with:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
A few days later, a red, blotchy rash typically develops. This rash usually starts on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body.
What To Do If You Think You Have Measles
If you or someone you know is showing symptoms:
- Stay home and avoid contact with others to help prevent the spread of the virus.
- Call your healthcare provider for an evaluation. Be sure to tell them you suspect measles before visiting in person, so proper precautions can be taken.
- Contact Halton Region Public Health (311) for guidance on next steps.
Early identification and isolation are key to preventing further spread.
