Adult Volunteer Roles


The Oakville Hospital volunteers are highly visible throughout the hospital. We have over 1000 active adult volunteers who strive to enhance services which the Hospital offers. Volunteers supplement the work of our staff by spending the time to touch the lives of our patients and visitors by helping them throughout the hospital.

We welcome applications from volunteers of varied skill sets. For those with healthcare degrees or certificates, please be advised that volunteering will not allow you the opportunity to practice or develop your clinical or technical skills, nor are our volunteer roles designed to be professional internship opportunities.

Volunteers usually commit to one shift per week, 2-4 hours in length and agree to fulfill this commitment for a minimum of 50 hours or 6 months of continuous service.

Most positions fall under one of these general categories:

Providing Customer Service to “Out-Patients” and Visitors

  • Gift Shop/Convenience Store – assist customers with selection and purchase
  • Information Desk - direct visitors, transfer calls to patients
  • Way finding – greet, direct visitors from a main entrance or within a large department
  • Waiting Room Support in various areas, i.e. Day Surgery, Emergency Room, ICU, - provide information and companionship to patients and their family members

Working in “Non-Patient” Areas

  • Administrative Support – clerical assistance such as reminder calling, filing, mailings
  • Fundraising Projects – Bingo, HELPP Lottery, special projects
  • Handy Person – tactical work, i.e. wheelchair repairs, cane and crutch repairs

Working in “In-Patient” Areas

  • Patient Visiting – spend quality time with patients
  • Working With Patients – meal time support, visiting, recreational activities,
  • HELP – Hospital Elder Life Program

Patient Transport

  • Transport – transport patients and related items throughout the hospital
  • Halton Community Nursing Homes – transport patients at off-site locations
  • Various Carts – hospitality cart, library book cart, etc.


  • Musicians - Pianists and others entertain patients, families and visitors in lobby or patient units
  • Leadership – help coordinate a group of front-line volunteers

Youth Volunteer Roles

Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital’s youth volunteers are given a chance to be of service to the community, to learn the fundamentals of volunteer work and to be exposed to a health care environment.

Your assistance helps to enhance the service given by staff to ensure the best patient care! We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, dependable, sincere, able to accept supervision and are looking to actively participate in a valuable volunteer experience.

Opportunities for Youth Volunteers May Include:

  • Assisting staff and patients on the nursing units
  • Acting as a companion to patients by reading to them, playing games and visiting
  • Meal time support (not feeding)
  • Assisting staff and patients in out-patient clinics i.e. Dialysis or Diabetic Clinics
  • Serving customers in the Gift Shop/Convenience Store
  • Mobile Cart offerings (Gifts, Books/Magazines, Tea)
  • Patient Transport
  • Information Desk or Way Finding assistance
  • Out-patient Therapy program assistance

All Youth Volunteers must:

  • Be at least fourteen years of age
  • Be available to work at least one shift per week
  • Complete a minimum of 50 hours or 6 months of continuous service before receiving written confirmation of their hours.
