Enhanced Screening Precautions at Our Hospitals
Halton Healthcare is actively monitoring the spread of a novel Coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses ranging from the common cold to much more serious diseases. The new strain of Coronavirus is called Novel Coronavirus-Wuhan (COVID-2019).
Symptoms of COVID-2019 are non-specific, and very similar to those of the influenza virus including things like fever, dry cough, sore throat, muscle aches and headaches.
While the risk to Canadians is currently low, Halton Healthcare is proactively screening patients for COVID-2019 as well as other infectious diseases. You can get more information and keep up to date on Public Health Agency of Canada and Ontario Ministry of Health websites.
Patients arriving at the hospital’s Emergency Department will be asked:
- about their symptoms, particularly respiratory symptoms
- whether they have traveled to mainland China
- if they have come in contact with someone who has or is suspected of having coronavirus
If a patient is determined to be at risk of COVID-2019, they will be taken to an isolation room until a diagnosis can be confirmed. These additional screening measures may increase wait times in our already busy Emergency Departments and we appreciate your patience.
Always practice good hand hygiene and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
