Education & Recruitment

At Halton Healthcare, we foster a culture of lifelong learning. Our nurses are supported by a number of initiatives to learn, advance and specialize so they can develop and grow their careers.

A team of Professional Practice Clinicians (PPCs) provide professional practice support and leadership to our nurses. This group provides the professional practice infrastructure for professional nursing within the organization. Responsibilities include the nursing orientation program, preceptorship program, planning and implementing strategies to meet the on-going learning needs of nurses within the programs, policy and program development and implementation of best practices. Establishing the professional practice priorities for the PPC group to ensure nurses are supported throughout the organization occurs on an annual basis.

Durham College Critical Care Program

All three Hospitals are committed to providing Registered Nurses with an opportunity to grow their career in Critical Care. Since 2007, the unit has supported new graduate and experienced medical/surgical Registered Nurses in a combined academic program and practical orientation process through the "Critical Care Nursing Hub of Excellence" at Durham College. The program includes e-learning courses, simulation education and hands-on preceptored experience in our Critical Care Unit. Upon successful completion of the course, Registered Nurses receive a Level 3 Critical Care Certificate from Durham College.

Interprofessional Preceptorship Program

As an organization, Halton Healthcare is actively involved in the education and preceptoring of nursing students from universities and colleges from across the province as well as students from as far as PEI and Vancouver! Our staff nurses have a distinguished history of this invaluable clinical teaching role that helps to shape and cement their theoretical knowledge base. During a school semester, it is common for us to provide placements for approximately 175 nursing students - both Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses - throughout its three hospitals and across a variety of clinical care settings.

E-Learning

The eLearning centre gives Halton Healthcare staff access to online courses, quizzes and more. Staff may complete the required training at a time and place that is convenient for them and can access the online courses from any computer that has high speed internet access. Staff can control the pace of the course - go as fast or as slow as they choose, repeat sections, take a break whenever they like and return to the course at another time. All online learning activities are tracked - this means that staff are building their training and education history and managers can track compliance.

Inter-professional Practice Advisory Council (IPPAC)

The IPPAC meets on a monthly basis and functions in an advisory capacity to the CNO/Professional Practice Leader. IPPAC provides input into new policies and procedures affecting the multidisciplinary team to ensure compliance with Regulatory College standards. Regulatory news is a standing item for discussion on the monthly agenda. The committee supports professional learning by planning and organizing inter-professional “Lunch and Learn” education sessions that are offered two to three times per year.

Partnerships with Educational Institutions

Halton Healthcare continues to partner with a broad range and number of educational facilities primarily in the province of Ontario, but increasingly, from out of province/out of country (e.g. the U.S.A.) to provide clinical placements for students from all professional disciplines. Nursing Baccalaureate and Practical Nursing Programs are our major focus. Access to specialty areas continues to increase as a way to offer unique learning opportunities. A student orientation program is evolving to include all health professional students. In the coming year we hope to offer the Electronic Documentation and Order Entry training in e-learning modules. Hand Hygiene and WHIMIS modules using the e-learning program are available.
