Fast‑tracked expansion, in partnership with the province, will strengthen care across our communities by creating much-needed capacity
August 27, 2026 (Halton Region, ON) - Today, Halton Healthcare welcomed Ontario’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) to celebrate the official start of construction on a major hospital expansion that will add up to 123 new acute care beds across OTMH and Milton District Hospital (MDH).
Supported through the Government of Ontario’s investment of more than $150 million, today’s announcement marks a major milestone in expanding hospital capacity to meet the needs of one of Ontario’s fastest‑growing and aging regions. By activating purpose‑built but unfinished space across three floors at OTMH, and one floor at MDH, Halton Healthcare will rapidly increase inpatient capacity without the need to build a new facility.
“Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario’s health-care system, ensuring that more people in Halton and surrounding regions can connect to the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “As part of our $64 billion health infrastructure plan, today’s milestone means more families in the region will have access to world-class hospital care, closer to home.”
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, with new spaces opening to patients in spring 2028 – significantly faster and more cost effective than constructing a new facility. At the peak of construction, the project will support 200 construction jobs.
The expansion includes 111 new beds at OTMH and 12 at Milton District Hospital (MDH), allowing patients and families to benefit from improved access to high‑quality care, reduced wait times, and modern private and semi‑private rooms designed for dignity, comfort, and recovery.

Hospitals across Ontario continue to face record demand, driven in part by an aging population. In Halton Region, the number of residents aged 75 and older is expected to double within the next 20 years, intensifying pressures on inpatient services. Building out the unfinished space allows Halton Healthcare to respond quickly and responsibly to this growing need.
This initiative is designed not only to meet the needs of our communities, but also to support patients across the regional health system. The project reflects Halton Healthcare’s commitment to delivering the right care, in the right place, at the right time – today and for years to come.
