Showing Up Authentically: Jennifer’s Story of Inclusion
For much of her life, Jennifer felt like she didn’t quite fit in.
Jennifer grew up in the 1990s, a time when representation was limited and understanding was even more scarce. Conversations about identity were far less common – she often felt different from those around her. She recalls being bullied and often labeled as “weird” or “odd” simply for simply being herself.
Today, she proudly identifies as pansexual, but her journey to understanding wasn’t a straightforward one.
For Jennifer, Pride is deeply personal. As the parent of two transgender children, she found herself learning alongside them and searching for ways to support them as they explored their identities. In the process, she discovered more about herself than she ever expected.
"I met members of the transgender community and learned so much. Helping my children navigate their identities helped me understand my own. That’s when I discovered the term ‘pansexual’ and realized it was okay to identify that way or not to label myself at all. Just love who you love.”
These experiences have shaped Jennifer’s outlook on life and the way she connects with others. It also reinforced the importance of creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and accepted for who they are.
Through conversations with patients, colleagues, friends, and members of the community, Jennifer has seen firsthand how powerful it can be when people feel safe enough to be themselves.
When she was growing up, she didn’t often see people like herself reflected in the stories around her. Today, she hopes that by sharing her own experience, others might feel a little less alone.
Finding the confidence to live openly hasn’t happened overnight, but Jennifer is grateful for the support she’s received along the way.
Jennifer and her girlfriend got engaged last year, a milestone that meant a lot to her personally. When she shared the news with her coworkers, they all cheered and hugged her, creating a moment she describes as incredibly meaningful and affirming.
“When I first started, I was a little scared to say anything,” Jennifer shares. “But my manager, Colleen, was so gracious and kind. She made me prouder to stand up and be who I am.”
Through it all, Jennifer carries a simple but powerful mantra: “Lead with kindness. Live with gratitude. Love for all.”
Today, she embraces who she is with pride. “I don’t have to be quiet,” she says. “I can be loud and proud. I really appreciate that.”
