Halton Healthcare empowers patients by strengthening kidney care in the community

March 18, 2026 (Halton Region, ON) - More residents in Halton Hills are now able to receive life-sustaining dialysis in the comfort of their own homes. Halton Healthcare is expanding its home hemodialysis program, making it easier for patients to access care.

The program has extended access to residents in Georgetown and Acton, allowing more patients to receive treatment that fits their lives without the added strain of frequent hospital visits.

For patients, home hemodialysis offers greater flexibility, independence, and control over their care. Receiving treatment at home can reduce travel time, ease scheduling challenges, and lessen the physical and emotional strain often associated with ongoing dialysis.

“As the need for kidney care in our region grows, we are focused on expanding services that put patients first”, said Maria Doyle, Patient Care Manager, Independent Dialysis & Nephrology Clinics. “Programs like this support independence and helping patients live fuller lives while receiving the care they need where they are most comfortable.”

Established in 2020, patients in Halton Healthcare’s assisted home hemodialysis program are supported throughout every step of their care journey by a specialized renal care team. Patients receive dialysis treatments at home with the support of a Registered Practical Nurse, who monitors each two-hour treatment session to ensure safe, high-quality care.

For residents of Georgetown and Acton, this expansion means fewer trips to Halton Healthcare’s Oakville hospital site and more time receiving care in the comfort and convenience of home. It is one of the many ways Halton Healthcare is working to support patients beyond the hospital’s walls, alongside other Home First and community-based initiatives focused on bringing care closer to where people live.
